The tutorial I found at howtoforge (http://howtoforge.com/proftpd_mysql_virtual_hosting) is a great tutorial on how to install Proftpd, but it has an error in it which almost killed me today.

After you did as it says you might not be able to connect via ftp localhost.  This could be because the /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf misses a little argument before “SQLConnectInfo ftp@localhost proftpd password”.

Try to add the line “SQLBackend mysql”. And restart proftpd. If its still not working you, you might have forgotten to install libmysqlclient*-dev.

Today I hit the CAPSLOCK button again and was thinking “Why the hell is this stupid button there anyways?“.

Apperently it was used in the old days, when you did not have the ability to change fonts or font sizes for that reason you would write headlines in BOLD letters. Since I got tired of hitting CAPSLOCK (sorry for writing it big) I was searching for a  way to disable it!

I have been searching for a software with which I can do screencasts for my company’s website. I found Camtasia and thought, YES I finally found software that is easy to use and gives me all the functions I need. After making one video I noticed, that sadly Camtasia did not offer all the things I really needed like a professional sound editor. I then went on the long journey to discover that there were no real competitors for Windows based screencasting, which is sad because in my opinion TechSmith did not do the best possible job. Since I found not a lot of information from others about alternatives I am writing this entry.

I am using a combination of 3 different programs: CamStudio for recording the screen, Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0 for editing the video, adding subtitle and pan’n'zoom and for the sound I use Audacity. Of course it doesn’t work like an all in one “Standalone” application but it does a great job for me. You might ask is the combination of them all better than TechSmith’s Camtasia? In my opinion, yes because I have all the features I need and many more, which I may find useful in the future. Read more

Often you want to separate emergency, home and the work phone number because you just don’t want to be disturbed on a Saturday night at 4 am by some guy living on the other side of the earth. Okay some crazy people may but their’s something wrong then ;)

My idea would be that you have 3 phone numbers on one phone, and no I don’t want 3 SIM cards slots! What do we need that chipcard for anyways? Its bigger than my 4 GB card which I put into my phone and is not even capable of saving more than 100 numbers!

Anyways I want three numbers and I want to be able to turn some of them off. For example the home number would be turned off between 12 am and 6 am, my work number from 10 pm until 8am and I would never turn off the emergency number. What’s the advantage you may ask… it’s simple I have to carry one phone and get the advantage of 3 phones (and my employer wouldn’t have to pay for a VoIP Phone for my desk). Also I can separate calls from the screen that way I know whats going on. During meetings I will also be able to turn off my home and work number but still be available if bad things happen.

I hope I got some crazy phone company interested in the idea and they will be able to offer this to me in the next year. If the phone companies won’t do it I hope Skype or one of eBay’s competitors will create this opportunity (if this feature exists write it in the comments!).
